How 12V compressors are rated

12V compressors are rated at free flow (CFM at 0 PSI), which flatters them: output drops steeply as pressure rises. Compare duty cycle too. It tells you how long the compressor can run before it needs to cool, often stated at a specific pressure.

Battery clamps vs lighter plug

Compressors that clamp directly to the battery can draw 20–30 A, far more than a cigarette-lighter socket allows, so they fill large tires much faster. Run the engine while inflating to keep voltage up.

12V inflators can't run air tools. For garage use, see our portable compressor picks.

Frequently asked questions

What size 12 volt compressor do I need for 35 inch tires?

Look for at least about 2 CFM free flow, a 150 PSI rating and a duty cycle of 30% or more at 100 PSI, connected directly to the battery. Smaller units will overheat or take a long time.

Are 12 volt air compressors loud?

Yes, most are around 75–85 dB, but you only run them for a few minutes at a time.
