What makes a compressor portable

We count a compressor as portable if one person can carry it with one or two hands, generally under about 65 lb, and it runs on a 120V outlet or a tool battery. That covers small quiet compressors, hot-dog and pancake units and the larger twin-tank carry models.

Weight vs air: the trade-off

The lightest portable compressors weigh about 25–30 lb but deliver around 1 CFM at 90 PSI. Twin-tank units weigh around 60 lb but deliver 5+ CFM. Decide what tools you will run first (our air tool CFM chart helps), then pick the lightest compressor that covers it.

Tire inflators are not portable compressors

Many "portable air compressor" listings are tankless tire inflators. They are great for tires but can't run nailers or air tools. We cover those separately on our 12 volt and cordless pages.
