Questions and answers
What is the quietest air compressor?
The quietest compressor we recommend is the California Air Tools CAT-1P1060S, rated at 56 dB by its manufacturer, quieter than a normal conversation. It's best for nailers, airbrushes and inflation.
What is the best quiet air compressor overall?
Our top quiet pick is the California Air Tools 8010A (60 dB). It balances low noise with enough airflow for most nailing and inflation work.
How many decibels is a quiet air compressor?
We call a compressor quiet at 70 dB or below and ultra quiet at 60 dB or below. Standard compressors are usually 78–90 dB.
Are oil-free compressors quieter?
Not automatically. The quietest compressors are oil-free, but so are the loudest cheap pancakes. Quietness comes from slow motors and twin-piston pumps, so check the dB rating rather than the pump type.
What size compressor do I need for an impact wrench?
The 1/2-inch impact wrenches we cover average 4.2–6.5 CFM at 90 PSI and much more under load. For tire changes, choose about 5+ CFM at 90 PSI with a 10-gallon or larger tank, such as the California Air Tools 10020C. For daily shop use, choose a 60-gallon compressor.
What size compressor do I need for a brad or finish nailer?
Very little: the Metabo HPT NT50AE2 18-Gauge Brad Nailer uses about 0.025 cubic feet per shot, so even 1 CFM at 90 PSI keeps up at a normal pace. That's why ultra quiet 60 dB compressors are ideal for trim work.
What size compressor do I need for spray painting?
Check your gun's CFM rating. LVLP guns can work with about 4–5 CFM; most HVLP guns need 8–15 CFM at their working pressure, which means a 60-gallon compressor for full panels. Add a water separator and dryer.
What does CFM at 90 PSI mean?
It's how many cubic feet of air per minute the compressor delivers while holding 90 PSI, the pressure most air tools run at. It's the best single number for comparing compressors.
Is a bigger tank better?
A bigger tank lets you work longer between motor starts, but it doesn't increase airflow. Pick CFM first, then tank size for how long your bursts of use are.
What is the quietest pancake air compressor?
The BOSTITCH BTFP02012 6 Gallon Pancake, rated at 78.5 dB.
Can I use an air compressor indoors?
Electric compressors, yes, with ventilation and away from flammable vapors. Quiet 60 dB models suit finished rooms. Never run a gas compressor indoors because of carbon monoxide.
How do I quiet an air compressor?
Move it as far from where you work as your hose allows (each doubling of distance cuts about 6 dB), stand it on rubber anti-vibration pads, fit an intake filter silencer, and if needed build an enclosure with plenty of ventilation. Keep it maintained. If you work next to it daily, replacing it with a 60–70 dB quiet compressor makes the biggest difference.
Can I add a tank to my silent air compressor?
Yes. Connect a pressure-rated auxiliary air tank (rated at or above your compressor's max PSI) to the outlet with a hose. It adds reserve air for longer bursts, but the small quiet pump will take longer to refill it, and it does not increase CFM. Drain the extra tank too.
Where can I buy a silent 6 gallon air compressor?
Quiet compressors are sold online and at home centers and tool stores. Most 6-gallon pancakes are not quiet, typically 78–82 dB. For quiet operation, look at 60 dB models with 2–8 gallon tanks in our ultra quiet ranking.
How often should I drain my compressor tank?
After every use for portables and daily for shop compressors, or fit an automatic drain. Water left in a steel tank causes rust.
Do I need a 240V outlet for an air compressor?
Only for large shop compressors (usually 60 gallons and up). Portable and 10–20 gallon compressors run on 120V, though 2 HP models want a dedicated 20 A circuit.
Single-stage or two-stage: which should I buy?
Single-stage is fine for home use. Two-stage compressors reach about 175 PSI, store more air and suit continuous shop work.
Can a cordless compressor run a nail gun?
Only a battery compressor with a tank. Tankless battery inflators are for tires and inflatables only.
What oil goes in an air compressor?
Non-detergent compressor oil, usually ISO 100 / SAE 30, or the oil your manufacturer specifies. Oil-free compressors need none.
Are the dB figures on this site measured by you?
No. They are manufacturer or retailer ratings, and we show the source of each one. We don't present them as our own measurements. If we add our own readings, they'll be clearly labeled as hands-on notes.
