How a two-stage compressor works

The first, larger piston compresses air to roughly 90–100 PSI. An intercooler tube cools it, then a smaller second piston raises it to around 175 PSI. Cooling between stages makes the pump more efficient and keeps it cooler, which is why two-stage pumps suit long run times. Our air compressor pump guide explains it in more detail.

Do you need two stages?

If your tools run at 90 PSI and you rarely run them continuously, a single-stage compressor is fine and cheaper. Choose two-stage if you run sanders, grinders or blasting for long periods, or if several people share the compressor.

Quietest in class

Frequently asked questions

Is a 2 stage air compressor worth it?

For shops running air tools for long periods, yes: more stored air, cooler running and longer pump life. For occasional home use, a single-stage compressor is usually enough.

What PSI does a 2 stage compressor reach?

Most two-stage shop compressors cut out at 175 PSI, versus about 135 PSI for single-stage units.
