Gear for your compressor

Best compressor oil for air compressors

The right compressor oil for most oil-lubricated piston compressors is a non-detergent ISO 100 (SAE 30) compressor oil. Use your compressor maker's own oil if the manual requires it, for example the Ingersoll Rand All Season Select Synthetic Lubricant for Ingersoll Rand pumps. Never use detergent motor oil.

Why not regular motor oil?

Engine oils contain detergents that keep soot suspended. Compressors don't make soot, and detergent oils can foam and carry over into the air stream and form deposits on hot valves. Compressor oils are non-detergent and formulated to resist oxidation at the high discharge temperatures inside a pump.

Synthetic vs conventional

Synthetic oils handle temperature extremes better and typically allow longer change intervals; conventional ISO 100 oil is cheaper per change. Both work if you follow the manual's change interval. Some manufacturers specify their own oil for warranty coverage, so check before switching.

Oil-free compressors

Oil-free compressors, including every ultra quiet model we list, never need compressor oil. See our oil free rankings.

Safety: unplug the compressor and release all tank pressure before opening the oil fill or drain. Hot oil can burn; let the pump cool first.

How to change air compressor oil

Replace the oil in an oil-lubricated piston air compressor pump.

You'll need: Wrench or socket for the drain plug, Drain pan, Funnel, Non-detergent compressor oil, Rags.

  1. Unplug and depressurize. Switch off and unplug the compressor, then drain all air from the tank.
  2. Let it cool. Wait for the pump to cool so the oil is warm, not hot.
  3. Drain the old oil. Place a pan under the pump, remove the oil drain plug, and let the oil drain completely. Tilt slightly toward the drain if your manual allows.
  4. Refill. Refit the drain plug, then fill through the fill port with the specified compressor oil until it reaches the center of the sight glass or the dipstick mark.
  5. Check and dispose. Wipe up drips, run the compressor briefly, recheck the level, and take the used oil to a recycling point.

Frequently asked questions

What oil do I use in an air compressor?

A non-detergent compressor oil, usually ISO 100 (SAE 30) for piston compressors, or the oil your manufacturer specifies. Check the manual or the label near the oil fill.

How often should I change air compressor oil?

Follow your manual. Many piston compressors call for a change after the first break-in hours and then at regular hour or month intervals, sooner in dusty or hot conditions. Check the level before each use.

Can I use SAE 30 motor oil in a compressor?

Only if it is non-detergent. Standard detergent motor oil is not recommended for compressors.
