Ranked by noise, then airflow

Best quiet air compressors

The best quiet air compressor for most people is the California Air Tools 8010A: rated at 60 dB (about as loud as a normal conversation), with 2.2 CFM at 90 PSI. If silence matters more than airflow, the quietest we list is the California Air Tools CAT-1P1060S at 56 dB.

How we rank quiet compressors

Every compressor here is judged on noise first, using the manufacturer's decibel rating, then on real airflow (CFM at 90 PSI), then on buyer feedback, build and value. Manufacturers measure noise at different distances, so we show where each dB figure comes from and treat small differences (1–2 dB) as a tie. Read how loud air compressors are for the background.

Quiet vs airflow: pick the right trade-off

Quiet compressors get their low noise from slow-turning motors (around 1,700 RPM instead of 3,400) and oil-free twin-piston pumps. Slower means less air per minute. At 60 dB, the most airflow we found is 2.6 CFM at 90 PSI from the Makita MAC320Q Quiet Series: enough for nailers, inflation and blow guns, not for sanders or grinders.

If you need to run an impact wrench or a spray gun, step up to a 70 dB class compressor such as the California Air Tools 10020C. Each 10 dB sounds about twice as loud, so 70 dB is still far quieter than a typical 80–85 dB contractor compressor. Use our CFM chart for air tools to check what you need.

Quiet compressor checklist

  • Noise rating with a source. Prefer brands that state how they measured (for example ISO 3744).
  • CFM at 90 PSI, not CFM at 40 PSI or "displacement". That is the number that runs tools.
  • Max PSI and tank size. A higher cut-out stores more air, so the motor runs less often.
  • Circuit. 2 HP quiet units can draw 14–15 A; give them their own 20 A circuit.

The rankings

Noise figures are manufacturer or retailer ratings (source shown on each card), not our own measurements. Price bands reflect Amazon prices on the check date and change often.

Frequently asked questions

What is the quietest air compressor?

The quietest compressor we list is the California Air Tools CAT-1P1060S, rated at 56 dB by its manufacturer, which is quieter than a normal conversation. It trades airflow for silence, so it suits nailers, airbrushes and inflation rather than air-hungry tools.

Is 60 dB quiet for an air compressor?

Yes. 60 dB is roughly the level of a normal conversation, and most standard compressors are rated between 75 and 90 dB. Because decibels are logarithmic, a 60 dB compressor sounds about a quarter as loud as an 80 dB one.

Can a quiet air compressor run an impact wrench?

Only the larger 70 dB class models can, and only in short bursts. A 1/2-inch impact wrench averages roughly 4–6.5 CFM and much more under load, so you need around 5 CFM at 90 PSI and a 10-gallon or larger tank. The 60 dB models are too small.

Why are quiet compressors more expensive?

They use slower, larger motors and twin-piston pumps to make the same air at lower RPM, and many use aluminum tanks. You pay more per CFM, but the slower pumps often last longer and you can run them indoors.
