Best 1/2" air impact wrenches

The best air impact wrench for most garages is the Ingersoll Rand 231C 1/2" Impact Wrench, which averages 4.2 CFM at 90 PSI. To run a 1/2-inch pneumatic impact wrench well you need about 5+ CFM at 90 PSI and a 10-gallon or larger tank. The quietest compressor that covers every impact here is the California Air Tools CAT-60040CAD.

"Quietest compressor that runs it" covers typical use with a 30% margin. Continuous grinding or sanding uses the at-load figure and needs much more air.

CFM calculator

The calculator needs JavaScript. Without it, add up the CFM figures in the tool table below, multiply by 1.3 for a safety margin, and compare the result with the CFM at 90 PSI column in our comparison table.

Torque isn't everything

Advertised "nut-busting" torque is measured at ideal pressure and airflow. With a compressor that can't keep up, an impact wrench loses much of that torque. Match the wrench to your compressor, use a 3/8" ID hose, and keep fittings high-flow.

Compressor sizing for an impact wrench

  • Tire rotations at home: about 5 CFM at 90 PSI with a 10–20 gallon tank.
  • Suspension and frequent shop use: 10+ CFM at 90 PSI and a 60-gallon tank.
  • Small pancake compressors can crack a lug nut in short bursts but won't sustain an impact.

Check your exact setup with the CFM calculator, or browse 10 gallon and shop compressors.

Safety: use impact-rated sockets only, wear eye and hearing protection, and torque lug nuts to spec with a torque wrench afterward. An impact wrench is not a torque wrench.

Frequently asked questions

What size air compressor do I need for a 1/2 impact wrench?

For occasional tire work, about 5 CFM at 90 PSI and a 10-gallon or larger tank. For regular shop use, 10+ CFM at 90 PSI and a 60-gallon compressor.

Can a pancake compressor run an air impact gun?

Only in short bursts. A pancake compressor at 2.6–4 CFM will run down quickly, and the wrench will lose torque.

Are pneumatic impact wrenches loud?

Yes, typically around 90+ dBA while impacting, louder than most compressors. Wear hearing protection.
