Our take

The Type 30 two-stage pump is one of the most common professional shop compressors in North America, and the 2340L5-V is its 5 HP, 60-gallon version. It delivers 14.3 CFM at 90 PSI and 14.0 CFM at its 175 PSI maximum.

That is enough for an auto shop running impact wrenches, die grinders and a paint gun, though not all at once at full load. The splash-lubricated cast-iron pump runs at lower speed than direct-drive units, which helps it last.

It is not quiet. Retail specs put it at about 85 dB, so in a home garage or a shop with an office next door, plan to put it in a separate room and run a hard line. Our How Loud Is an Air Compressor guide covers how to do that.

Pros

  • 14.3 CFM at 90 PSI
  • Two-stage cast-iron pump built for long hours
  • 175 PSI max

Cons

  • About 85 dB: plan for a separate room or enclosure
  • Needs a 240V circuit and an anchored pad

What it can run

With a 30% safety margin, 14.3 CFM at 90 PSI comfortably covers these tools from our list (nailers assumed at 30 shots a minute):

Who it's for, and who should skip it

Best for: Professional two-stage shop air.

Buy it if: you run air tools for long stretches in a shop; you run impact wrenches, ratchets or spray guns in bursts.

Skip it if: you need to work indoors or near people without hearing protection; you don't have, or can't install, a 240V circuit.

How it compares in its class

  • Ranked #2 of 4 in 60 gallon.
  • Quieter than 0 of the 1 other rated models in that list (it is one of the louder options).
  • 14.3 CFM at 90 PSI against a class median of 11.3 CFM, so above average airflow for the class.
  • Price band $1,500+; see every spec side by side in the comparison table.

Ownership tips

  • Drain the tank after each use (daily on a shop compressor) to stop rust from the inside.
  • Check the oil level before use and change it on the schedule in the manual, using non-detergent compressor oil.
  • Have an electrician install a dedicated 240V circuit sized to the motor, and anchor the tank on a level floor.
  • Test the safety relief valve now and then by pulling its ring briefly, and never adjust or plug it.

General guidance; always follow the owner's manual. More in our maintenance checklist.
