Our take
Most 'cordless air compressors' are really tire inflators with no tank. The 2840-20 is different: it has a 2-gallon tank, a 135 PSI cut-out and enough airflow (1.2 CFM at 90 PSI) to run brad and finish nailers from an M18 battery.
Milwaukee rates it at 68 dBA. That is louder than the best corded quiet models, but quieter than most corded pancake compressors, and no cord makes it easy to use on punch lists, in new builds before power is on, or on a roof.
It is sold as a bare tool, so budget for a high-capacity M18 battery if you don't already own one. Runtime depends on battery size and nailing pace.
Pros
- No cord or outlet needed
- 68 dBA, quieter than many corded pancakes
- Real 2-gallon tank, unlike tankless inflators
Cons
- Bare tool: battery and charger sold separately
- 1.2 CFM at 90 PSI is for nailers and inflation only
What it can run
With a 30% safety margin, 1.2 CFM at 90 PSI comfortably covers these tools from our list (nailers assumed at 30 shots a minute):
- Metabo HPT NT50AE2 18-Gauge Brad Nailer (0.025 cu ft per shot)
Who it's for, and who should skip it
Best for: Cordless trim work where there is no outlet.
Buy it if: you want noticeably less noise than a typical 80 dB compressor; your main jobs are nailing, inflation and blow-off; you want a pump with no oil to change; you move it around often (about 31.2 lb).
Skip it if: you plan to run impact wrenches, sanders or spray guns for long.
How it compares in its class
- Ranked #11 of 12 in best quiet air compressors.
- Quieter than 4 of the 11 other rated models in that list.
- 1.2 CFM at 90 PSI against a class median of 2.3 CFM, so below average airflow for the class.
- Price band $300–$600; see every spec side by side in the comparison table.
Ownership tips
- Drain the tank after each use (daily on a shop compressor) to stop rust from the inside.
- The pump is oil-free, so there's no oil to change; keep the intake filter clean instead.
- Plug it straight into a wall outlet and use a longer air hose instead of a long, thin extension cord.
- Test the safety relief valve now and then by pulling its ring briefly, and never adjust or plug it.
General guidance; always follow the owner's manual. More in our maintenance checklist.
